Acarbose is a common medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and other conditions as directed by a doctor. Acarbose works by slowing the rate by which carbohydrates are digested and introduced into the bloodstream. This can help to control levels of blood sugar many individuals with type 2 diabetes struggle to maintain. Acarbose should not be used if you are allergic to any of the parts of acarbose. Those who may have disorders of the bowel system, including blockage in the intestinal tract or inflammatory bowel disease, are advised not to take this medication.
- Type 2 Diabetes
Acarbose is often prescribed in the form of an oral tablet. Before beginning a treatment plan with acarbose, ask your doctor what dosage regimen is best suited for your needs. The following are some common dosage amounts initially prescribed for acarbose: Adults:
- An initial dose of 25 mg may be prescribed to be taken by mouth 3 times per day, or as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may want to adjust this dosage, especially for certain individuals living with other medical conditions, such as liver dysfunction or bowel disorders.
- The maximum adult dosage is 50 mg to be taken 3 times per day. You should not exceed an amount of 100 mg per individual dose, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
