Bile acid sequestrants is a class of drugs used in reduction of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. These drugs work by binding themselves to bile acids within the intestines and this prevents the steroids from being absorbed back in the body. Bile acids usually contain cholesterol. The binding complex is normally insoluble and it is therefore excreted from the body inform of faeces. Low bile acid in the blood stimulates the liver to increase its production from the fats. Depletion of cholesterol in the blood increases LDL receptor action which stimulates the removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood.
There are only three medicines found in this class of drugs. They include the following
Bile acid sequestrants are used in lowering of cholesterol levels in the blood. They work by attaching themselves to bile acids which carry cholesterol. The binding complex is normally insoluble and therefore it is egested from the body through faeces. Low bile acids in the blood stimulate synthesis of more steroids by the liver from cholesterol leading to low levels of fats in the blood. High cholesterol levels in the body thicken the walls of the arteries and this may result in conditions like heart attack because the blood is not able to flow efficiently. The signs and symptoms of heart attack will include fatigue, pain in the chest, edema and others. Another medical condition that may arise from high cholesterol levels in the body is high blood pressure. This condition does not present any sign and symptom though sometimes the patients may have a headache.
Despite the many benefits from bile sequestrants, various patients have complained of undesired effects resulting from this class of drugs. Do not stop using your medication without consulting your doctor. Nausea and bloating are some of the common side effects resulting from bile sequestrants. It is highly recommended to see your doctor if any of the following serious signs and symptoms occur.
Very serious side effects
Before the prescription and administration of bile sequestrants the patients are advised to tell their doctors about the diet they normally take, other drugs they use and whether they are suffering from any other medical condition. This is because an interaction between this drug and the above named components may occur leading to more health complications. Conditions that interact with bile sequestrants
