  • Nystatin Uses

    Nystatin is mainly used for treating fungal infections that affect the gastrointestinal tract and the mouth. Nystatin worksby completely destroying theorganisms that are causing the infection. The tablets and liquid are primarily used for treating candidiasis, fungal infection affecting the intestines. This infection occurs when there is an over growth of Candida albicans in the intestines due to corticosteroid or antibiotic use. Nystatin tablets and liquids can also be prescribed for treating other fungal infections. Nystatin powder is used for making oral liquid or it can be added to ointments or creams. The ointment and cream are intended for treating fungal skin infections. The vaginal tablets and vaginal cream are used for treating vaginal infections that are triggered by Candida albicans.
  • Nystatin Dosage

    Nystatin is available in lozenges, suspension and tablet form. There are also nystatin creams, ointments and powders for external application. Oral suspension:
    • Children: 1ml or 100000 units of the suspension given 3 or 4 times every day. The suspension should be dropped on the tongue and swallowed
    • Adults: the standard dosage is 4ml to 6ml of suspension four times every day
    Tablets:
    • Children: one tablet administered 3 times every day
    • Adults: one tablet 3 times daily. However, this dose can be increased to 2 tablets administered 3 times daily
    Skin ointment or cream:
    • This cream or ointment should be applied on the affected body areas 2 times daily or as recommended by the doctor or pharmacist
    • Serious fungal infections will call for use of both topical and oral nystatin
    Vaginal cream:
    • The dosage is 5mg or one full applicator inserted into the vagina once every day for two weeks
    • In severe infections, the cream should be applied twice daily
    Vaginal tablets:
    • One nystatin tablet inserted into the vagina with an applicator 1 or 2 times daily
    • Treatment should be continued for two weeks even during menstruation
