In Matthew 19:4, Jesus states clearly, “Have ye not read , that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female...” This was retorted by him in more than 2 instances, where he put his audience to test, in their ability to comprehend what is written in scriptures, by paying attention to the details. The word “to read” is not a mere glancing or a mere capture by memory, rather it is to pay attention to details; to the intricacies of comments made in scriptures, stories, narratives, and events. Our motive when we commenced this series; “How To Read Your Bible In a Simple Way,” has been to help believers in a very elementary stage see and understand how the scriptures ought to be read. Paul repeats the same theme of Jesus’ instructions and admonition in Ephesians 3. Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Vs 4 Whereby, when ye read , ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) This means that reading plays a major role in our understanding and our walk with God. We believe that believers ought to know how to read the scriptures; how to pay attention to the details. In the preceding 3 Volumes of this series, we have taken a journey of helping believers to see how texts of scriptures are to be focused on, in order to understand the intention of the author. This particular volume is a bit more expansive. We are focusing on reading the Bible as a text, which has interwoven texts embedded in it. This means that you should be able to originally and legitimately have scriptures interpret itself. We will be looking at how texts are not as English as they sound, and how if we just stay within the texts of scriptures, a whole lot of understanding will flood our minds. Obviously, we have also developed certain methods that will help our study of scriptures generally, that is, literary devices, or should we say, literary techniques that will help you and I in our study and understanding of scriptural themes. The Bible requires interpretation. Why is this so? It is because it was written in ancient languages that we didn’t (don’t) speak. Its events were captured in ancient culture, and therefore developed its themes in New Testament books, as we now refer to them, from the same books that were written in ancient language forms and formats. This is our utmost desire in this series, as we continue the 4th Volume, to allow you to read the texts and understand the texts. We counsel that you get the earlier volumes; Volumes 1 - 3, as you see the sequence and the way we have developed the theme or thematic study of scripture itself. So, take your Bibles and your writing materials, and equally your study materials. I will advise that you get a concordance, and if you can also, dictionaries and translations of scriptures; very possibly the Greek and Hebrew translations as well, as we study this together and see the light of God’s word flood our minds. So, we trust God that this will bring understanding, not just to your way, but to the Body of Christ in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I remain multidimensionally yours, Chris Olusegun Onayinka.
