Azulfidine is used for the treatment of bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD. It causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine. This medication is not used for the cure of this ailment, but is used to decrease the symptoms that are brought by this disease. Once the ulcerative colitis attack is treated, this medication is used to increase the time in between the attacks. This medicine works by reducing swelling and irritation found in the large intestines.
Dosage of Azulfidine is given depending on how an individual responds and tolerate the medication. The initial dosage in adults is 3-4 grams daily in doses that have been evenly divided and with intervals that do not exceed 8 hours. There are some instances that you might be required to take small doses of 1-2 grams daily to reduce the possibility of having gastrointestinal intolerance. In case doses go over 4 grams, there are chances of toxicity. For children, they should take 40-60 mg/g body weight for a period of 24 hours. This can be divided into 3 or 6 doses.
