Boostrix is a vaccine that is part of a group of drugs known as bacterial vaccines. It increases the natural defense in the body against pertussis infection and toxins released by diphtheria and tetanus bacteria. This active booster immunization drug works by introducing small amounts of toxin and bacterial components into the bloodstream to help the body develop immunity against these components. Only some parts of bacteria (not live bacteria) are used and the toxins are detoxified. However, these components can still stimulate the production of antibodies thereby inducing immunity capable of attacking and fighting any future bacteria that could cause infection and toxins, which may be produced during diphtheria and tetanus infections.
