    Caprelsa is administered to patients suffering from medullary thyroid cancer. Medullary thyroid cancer starts in individual cells, which release calcitonin, a hormone produced in the thyroid by cells called the C- cells. The drug works by slowing growth of blood vessels that feed cancer cells with nutrients and oxygen. It slows the growth of such blood vessels thus helping reduce the size of the tumor. Caprelsa also works directly to kill the cancer cells or slow down their rate of growth. It is also used in treating thyroid cancer that has spread or metastasized to other parts of the body.     Dosage of Caprelsa depends on the individual and the condition being treated. When taking the capsules, a patient should not dissolve, open, or crush them. A patient should not take more than one dose of the drug at any one given time.
