This medication is used to treat bacterial infections such as, otitis media acute, bronchitis, soft tissue infections, community-acquired pneumonia, respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, and strep throat. It should by no means be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold and flu. Overuse (or wrongful use) of this medication will lead to significantly decreased effectiveness.
- Bacterial Infections
Cefdinir is prescribed to be taken once or twice a day with or without food. For maximum effectiveness, it should be taken at around the same time each day. Dosage amounts vary depending on the patient's condition and response to treatment, but the regular approximate dosages are listed below.
- Adults: 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily for 5 to 10 days
- Adults: 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily for 10 days
- Adults: 300 mg twice daily for 10 days
Soft Tissue Infection
- Adults: 300 mg twice daily for 5 to 10 days or 600 mg once daily for 10 days
Cefdinir Side Effects
As with any other drugs, Cefdinir is not without side effects. However, these side effects may vary individually. Below is a list of side effects that patients using Cefdinir have experienced. It should be noted that not all of the side effects associated with Cefdinir have been mentioned in the list below. Furthermore, if any of these symptoms persist for more than a week, then you should seek a doctor's attention immediately.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following:
- mood changes
- abdominal pain
- more or less urine than usual
- persistent nausea or vomiting
- easy bruising or bleeding
- yellowing eyes or skin
- new signs of infection
- dark urine
- unusual fatigue
Some medications can interfere with full absorption of Cefdinir. As with any medication, you should provide your doctor with a full list of medications and supplements you are taking or plan to take before starting treatment with Cefdinir. This medication can sometimes interfere with results in lab testing, so if you have to undergo tests while taking it you should inform the lab technician first.
