Chloroprocaine is generally a local anesthetic that is administered through injection. It is mainly used during labor and delivery or surgical procedures. Like other local anesthetics, Chloroprocaine works by blocking the conduction and generation of nerve impulses. It achieves this by increasing electrical excitation threshold in the nerves. It also slows down the transmission of the nerve impulse and reduces the rate at which the action potential rises. The active ingredient in chloroprocaine is chloroprocaine HCL. Chloroprocaine has the benefit of constricting blood vessels thereby reducing bleeding, this is unlike the other local anesthetics such as lidocaine. The actions of chloroprocaine are completely reversible.
- Anesthesia for labor, delivery or surgical procedures
Chloroprocaine can be given continuously using an indwelling catheter or as one injection. Like other local anesthetics, the dose that is given will vary depending on the anesthetic procedure, vascularity of tissues, the level of muscle relaxation that is needed, the duration of the procedure and the medical condition of patient. The recommended maximum chloroprocaine dose in adults is as follows:
- Without epinephrine: 11 mg for every kg of body weight.
- With epinephrine: 14 mg for each kg of body weight.
- The single doses should not be more than 800 mg and the single doses given with epinephrine should not surpass 1000 mg.
