  • Esmolol Uses

Patients who have irregular heartbeats and high blood pressure caused by surgery may be prescribed esmolol to manage these conditions. Esmolol may be used to treat high blood pressure and fast heartbeat during and after surgery. It affects how certain parts of the body such as the heart response to nerve impulses. Esmolol allows the heart to beat slower and reduces blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure increases the amount of blood and oxygen to the heart. Esmolol may also be used when aortic dissection is suspected in a patient. In aortic dissection, there is tearing in the inner wall of the aorta, which allows blood to flow in between layers of the walls making them force apart.
