Etanercept is a drug used in the treatment of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. The drug works as a TNF inhibitor, which means that it assists in reducing inflammation through inhibition of the pro-inflammatory factor TNF-alpha. One of the challenges with this drug is its association with various types of cancer and infection, specifically those involving white blood cells. Close monitoring is required during all phases of treatment. The drug is administered via subcutaneous injection, which can be given either at a clinic or home. The drug tends to interact most with drugs that deteriorate the immune response, such as cyclophosphamide or anakinra.
