  • Finasteride Uses

Finasteride, as a member of the 5-alpha reductase inhibitor class of drugs, works by reducing levels of DHT found in the body. DHT does, after all, play a dual role both in causing male pattern baldness and increasing the size of the prostate. Finasteride is used therefore in the treatment of these two conditions: androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hypertrophy. Finasteride is used to slow the rate of male pattern baldness, rather than preventing it altogether. When it comes to treating benign prostatic hypertrophy, finasteride is often used alongside other drugs to reduce its size, such as doxazosin. In limited circumstances, finasteride may be used in hormone replacement therapy in those patients undergoing male-to-female sex transition.
