Flonase, or Fluticasone propionate, is a steroid nasal spray that prohibits substances in the body from contributing to inflammation by hindering its effect on multiple cell types and mediators involved with inflammation. Inflammation, part of the body's immune system, is a biological response to remove harmful stimuli, irritants, or pathogens in the body. The five signs of inflammation include pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat. Flonase is used to improve breathing functions during this inflammation process and decrease overall inflammation in the nasal passages. Flonase is in the class of drugs known as corticosteroids, specifically glucocorticoids, which are hormones that affect the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat and protein.
