Gentamicin is used to treat various bacterial infections, specifically eye infections. However, it can be used to treat and prevent a wide variety of infections, particularly severe and serious infections. They include eye infections, urinary tract infections, and others. It may also be used for other purposes not mentioned here. It is normally administered by a healthcare provider but sometimes patients may be required to administer the medicine on their own.
- Bacterial Infections
Gentamicin dosage will depend on various factors including strength of the dose, age of the patient and the kind of bacteria or infection being addressed. However, the standard Gentamicin dosage for bacterial infections in adults is as follows
- Adults:- 1.5 to 2 mg/kg loading. This is then followed by 1 to 1.7 mg/kg every 8 hours
- The duration of this therapy is 14 days. This is, however, dependent on severity and nature of the infection.
