Patients with high blood pressure and angina may be prescribed nadolol. It may be used alone or doctors may prescribe it with other medicines to treat high blood pressure. Nadolol works by slowing the heart rate and decreasing the amount of blood the heart pumps. Nadolol helps reduce blood pressure, makes the heart pump blood more efficiently, and reduces workload of the heart. In people with atrial fibrillation, doctors may use if off label to control the heart rate. Other uses of nadolol are prevention of migraine headache and bleeding veins in patients with portal hypertension that is caused by cirrhosis.
Patients should take nadolol as prescribed by a doctor. The dosage may be changed occasionally by a doctor to ensure a patient gets the best results. You may need to check your blood pressure often when taking nadolol. If you stop taking nadolol suddenly, it may worsen your condition. Taking nadolol may make it difficult to tell when blood sugar is low, therefore, if you have diabetes, ensure you check blood sugar regularly. The dosage of nadolol may be administered based on the condition being treated.
- In treating angina pectoris, initial dose of 40 mg is administered orally one time a day. Maintenance dose of 40 to 80 mg may be needed.
- For hypertension treatment, 40 mg is taken one time a day. Maintenance dose of 40 to 80 mg may be administered.
- To treat Parkinsonian tremor, 40 to 60 mg of nadolol is taken one time a day.
