    Narcan is a pure narcotic antagonist that counters the effects of the narcotic drugs especially in the incidences of overdose. It reverses the depression of the respiratory system, hypotension and the central nervous system. Narcan can also occur in conjunction with opioids taken by mouth to reduce the risk of their misuse. It also reduces the mental depression. Narcan injection applies after the surgery to reverse the effects of the narcotics used during surgical procedures. In newborns, Narcan reduces the effects of the opiates taken by the pregnant mothers before the delivery. It reverses the effects of the opiates medications such as pentazocine (Talwin) and buprenorphine (Buprenex, Butrans).

  • Narcan Dosage

    Below is the necessary dose used by many doctors to give Narcan to their patients. However, depending on one's medical history and condition, a doctor may prescribe a different regimen. You shouldn't start or stop taking the drugs or even change the prescribed dose unless directed by your physician. The necessary Narcan dose is as follow:

    • For intravenous infusion, dilute 2 mg of Narcan using 500 ml saline or 5% dextrose solution to get a concentration of 0.004 mg/ml

    Opioid overdose dosage

    • Adults: use 0.4-2 mg Narcan dose intravenously
    • Pediatrics: take 0.001 mg/kg given IV

    Opioid-induced depression dosage

    • Pediatrics: the usual dose is 0.01 mg/kg.
