The thyroid hormone administered using Nature-Throid is a natural product that is made from animal thyroid glands (usually a pig's). A patient may experience low thyroid hormone levels either naturally or when the thyroid gland is injured by radiation or removed by surgery. Nature-Throid is used to treat hypothyroidism, certain types of goiters, and thyroid cancer. It can also be used for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) suppression and to test the thyroid function. This medication should not be used to treat infertility unless the condition is caused by low thyroid hormone levels. Below you will find the uses of Nature-Throid.
- Thyroid cancer
Dosage of Nature-Throid depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Nature-Throid is taken by mouth, usually once daily on an empty stomach. It may take several weeks before you notice an improvement in your symptoms. Tell your doctor if your condition worsens or persists after several weeks of taking this medication. Your healthcare provider may order tests regularly to check how well this medication is working. Below you will find a typical dosage of Nature-Throid.
- Adults: Initial dose is 30 to 32.5 mg orally once a day. Increase by 15 to 16.25 mg per day every 2 to 3 weeks to a maximum of 130 mg
- Children 0 to 6 months: 4.8 to 6 mg/kg/day
- Children 6 to 12 months old: 3.6 to 4.8 mg/kg/day
- Children 1 to 5 years: 3 -3.6 mg/kg/day
- Children 6 to 12 years: 2.4 to 3 mg/kg/day
- Children 12 years and older: 1.2 to 1.8 mg/kg/day
- Thyroid cancer: 30 mg to 120 mg per day
Nature-Throid Side Effects
Although current information shows that Nature-Throid may be used during pregnancy, the patient should notify their doctor if they are pregnant because the dose may need to be adjusted. The thyroid hormone contained are unlikely to harm a nursing infant through breastfeeding. Nature-Throid may contain inactive ingredients which can cause allergic reactions, talk to your doctor if you are allergic to pork products or if you have any other allergies. Loss of hair may occur during the first few months of treatment as your body adjusts to this medication, although this is usually temporary. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
