Nebcin use in the treatment of various bacterial infections is very effective. Doctors prescribe Nebcin for the treatment of serious infections caused by certain strains of bacteria. Nebcin is especially effective in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, central nervous system infections such as meningitis, Intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis, skin and bone infections and complicated urinary tract infections. Nebcin works by binding the bacteria to a sire and prevents them from growth and proliferation. As a result, the bacteria cells die. Doctors may prescribe Nebcin use for other purposes not mentioned here.

Nebcin dosage is prescribed by a doctor and depends on the infection being treated. Nebcin comes in the form of an injection which is administered either intramuscularly or intravenously. It can also be administered as a drip. There are other factors that also determine the Nebcin dosage. These include patient's bodyweight, their medical history and response to medication.
- The recommended Nebcin dose is 3 mg/kg per day administered in 3 equal doses every 8 hours.
- If the infections are serious, than the recommended Nebcin dosage increases to 5 mg/kg per day administered in 3 to 4 equal doses.
- This Dose can then be decreased when necessary. The recommended pediatric Nebcin dose is 6 to 7.5 mg/kg per day administered in 3 or 4 equally divided doses.
- The usual treatment period is 7 to 10 days and not longer unless in difficult and complicated cases.
Nebcin Side Effects
As with most medications, patients using Nebcin are likely to suffer a number of side effects. Most doctors endeavor to reduce the risk of side effects by adjusting Nebcin dosage based on a blood test. Some Nebcin side effects may be mild or moderate and are likely to go away after a couple of days. However, serious Nebcin side effects or any allergic reactions should be reported to the doctor at once for immediate medical attention. Some of the Nebcin side effects are;
- Fatigue, pale skin
- Vomiting, upset stomach
- Skin rash, dizziness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Difficulty breathing
- Ringing in the ears
- Balance problems
Patients are cautioned that Nebcin can cause serious nerve damage and kidney problems. The risks increase with age which means older patients are at a higher risk, as well as those receiving a larger dose.
