Nolvadex works by binding onto estrogen receptors in tumor cells thus preventing the growth of new cancer cells within the body. Women with a history of breast cancer are prescribed Nolvadex as a preventative measure. In general, Nolvadex is used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Breast cancer
- Premature puberty
- McCune-Albright Syndrome
- Bipolar disorder
- Control of gene expression
- Riedel's Thyroiditis
Nolvadex also prevents bone loss by mimicking the effects of estrogen within the bone cells. Breast cancer patients treated with Nolvadex show less severe memory impairment than those treated with other drugs such as Anastrozole.
Nolvadex dosage varies from patient to patient and can only be determined by a doctor. The dosage will also depend on the type of condition being treated. The recommended dosage is:
- Adults, 20-40 mg/day for 5 years.
- Reduction of incidence - 20 mg/day for 5 years.
- Breast cancer palliative, 10-20mg/day
- Women with Ductal Carcinoma, 20 mg/day for 5 years
- Women after mastectomy, axillary dissection or breast irradiation, 10mg 2-3 times a day for 5 years
- Breast cancer palliative, 10-20 mg/day twice day
- McCune-Albright Syndrome (girls 2-10 years of age), 20mg/day for 12 months
- Precocious puberty (girls 2-10 years of age), 20mg/day for 12 months.
Nolvadex comes with a dosing syringe or spoon. You may need several blood tests while taking Nolvadex so as to determine its effectiveness and/or other effects it may be having on the body. Nolvadex can be taken on an empty stomach.
