    Probenecid is used to treat patients with chronic gout and gouty arthritis. It is used as a preventative measure to prevent attacks related to gout, not to treat them once they occur. Probenecid targets the kidneys to help the body eliminate uric acid. Probenecid is also used to make certain antibiotics more effective by preventing the body from eliminating them.

  • Probenecid Dosage

    Dosing of Probenecid will vary amongst patients. The prescribing doctor's orders and directions on the label should always be followed. The amount of Probenecid needed depends on the strength, the number of doses taken each day, the time between doses, the length of time taken, and the diagnosis of the patient.

    • The usual prescribed adult dosage of Probenecid ranges from 250-2000 mg per day in divided doses.
    • Probenecid dosage may be increased by 500 mg increments every four weeks as tolerated if symptoms are not controlled.
    • The usual prescribed pediatric dosage of Probenecid starts at 25 mg/kg daily and increases to 40 mg/kg daily, for a maximum dose of 2000mg daily.
