    Sodium (Sodium bicarbonate) is an electrolyte which is used for treating metabolic acidosis whereby it is a condition in which there is too much acid in the body and certain drug intoxications, and replacing bicarbonate lost due to severe diarrhea. This medication neutralizes excess acid in the blood also replacing bicarbonate when excess has been lost from the body. Sodium bicarbonate may also be used for treating other conditions as determined by your doctor. Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in Sodium bicarbonate or if you have you have alkalosis (too little acid in the body) or low blood levels of calcium or chloride or if you are vomiting.

  • Sodium Dosage

    Sodium (Sodium bicarbonate) dosage differs with the treatment, age difference, and it is different from one patient to another. The amount of medicine to be taken depends on the strength of the medicine. Dosage for relieving heartburn or sour stomach Sodium bicarbonate powder:

    • Adults and teenagers: 1/2 teaspoonful
    • children: Consult the doctor

    Sodium bicarbonate tablets:

    • Adults and teenagers: 325 mg to 2 grams 1-4 times a day.
    • Children up to 6 years of age: Consult the doctor for instructions.
    • Children 6 to 12 years of age: The dose is 520 mg. Repeat dosage after 30 minutes

    Dosage for Urinary Alkalinization

    • Adults and teenagers: 4 grams, then 1 to 2 grams after every four hours.
    • Children: Dosage varies with body weight
    • The usual dose is 23 to 230 mg per kilogram (kg) a day.

    Sodium (Sodium bicarbonate) may cause unwanted side effects that may require unwanted side effects. It also has some needed side effects that may not require reporting at all.
