Tobramycin is an antibiotic drug used in the treatment of a wide array of bacterial infections. It mostly targets what are known as gram-negative bacteria, that is to say, bacteria that possess a thick cell wall. Tobramycin targets this cell wall and, as a result, compromises the biological integrity of the bacterial cell. Tobramycin is used in conditions such as pyelonephritis, pneumonia, bacteremia, endocarditis, osteomyelitis and many more. Tobramycin is usually administered via the intravenous or intramuscular routes, but the drug can also be delivered via inhalational and ophthalmic routes too. Tobramycin may also be used for purposes not listed in this guide, at the discretion of the prescriber.
- Skin Infection
Tobramycin is a prescribed drug and for this reason you have to adhere to the dosage and treatment regimen set if you are to realise the desired effects of the drug. The only instance in which you should alter your dose is if you have consent from your doctor, doing so without consulting them could expose you to serious side effects and compromise your response to the treatment regimen. Your dose will be set based on the following factors
- Your medical condition
- The severity of the medical condition
- Your body weight
A Tobramycin dose is set as follows
- For the treatment of abdominal infections, pneumonia, soft tissue infection, bacterial infections, peritonitis, meningitis, endocarditis, sepsis, the initial dose is set at 1mg/kg administered intravenously or intramuscularly within every 8 hours for serious infections. For life-threatening infections, the dose should be started at 5mg/kg daily and reduced to 3mg/kg per day.
