Triazolam is a benzodiazepine. It functions by depressing the central nervous system causing drowsiness to help aid in falling asleep. Triazolam possesses pharmacological properties similar to that of other benzodiazepines drugs, but it is usually only used as a sedative to cure severe insomnia. Apart from the hypnotic properties triazolam has, sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties are also present. Because of its short half-life, triazolam is not effective for patients that suffer from early wakening or frequent awakenings.
