Valcyte is an antiviral drug that is used to treat Cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is activated to ganciclovir in the body, which works by slowing down the ability of CMV virus to reproduce itself and prevents the spread of the virus to other parts of the body.     Valcyte is used to prevent complications caused by CMV virus in patients who have received organ transplants. It is also used to reduce the CMV infection in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy. Valcyte also helps to control CMV retinitis thus reducing the risk of blindness.

  • Valcyte Dosage

    Dosage of Valcyte is based on the medical condition of the patient and the patient's response to treatment. The dosage is based on the size and function of the kidney. The drug is available orally in 450 mg tablets. The recommended dosage for patients who have received a transplant is 900 mg once daily and should be started within ten days of transplantation. The dosage should continue for six months after the transplantation. The intervals of administration of Valcyte should be evenly spaced to maintain it at a constant level. Patients with HIV might initially need to take the 900 mg dose twice a day for the first three weeks.
