Though the causes of depression and how Zoloft works in the brain are not fully understood, it's thought that Zoloft increases the activity of serotonin in the brain, which relieves symptoms of depression.   • Zoloft Uses

    Zoloft acts by increasing the activity of serotonin in the brain, which can relieve symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and traumatic experiences. It accomplishes this by inhibiting the reabsorption of serotonin, which allows the chemical to linger in the brain. Zoloft and other SSNRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are generally used for severe cases of depression and stress, and are not considered as effective when applied to milder forms of the disorders.

  • Zoloft Dosage

    Zoloft dosage is dependent on the individual that it is being administered to. Zoloft should be administered once daily, either in the morning or evening. The following dosage is an average dose and could differ among individuals. Follow your medical professional's directions for best results.

    Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

    • Treatment should be administered at a dose of 50 mg once daily

    Panic Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder

    • Treatment should be initiated with a dose of 25 mg once daily. After one week, the dose should be increased to 50 mg once daily

    Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

    • Treatment should be initiated with a dose of 50 mg/day, either daily throughout the menstrual cycle or limited to the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, depending on physician assessment

    Dosage for Children and Adolescents:

    • Zoloft treatment should be initiated with a dose of 25 mg once daily in children (ages ,12) and at a dose of 50 mg once daily in adolescents (ages 1,17).
  • Zoloft Side Effects

    While taking Zoloft, individuals may experience different side effects. Note, not all side effects are listed here. If you experience any severe side effects, consult with your doctor immediately or seek medical attention.

    Common side effects of Zoloft include:

    • nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea or indigestion
    • change in sleep habits including increased sleepiness or insomnia
    • increased sweating
    • sexual problems including decreased libido and ejaculation failure

    • feeling tired or fatigued
    • agitation

  • Zoloft Interactions

    Like any medication, Zoloft may be affected by other drugs and substances. In many cases Zoloft should not be combined with other medications unless approved by a physician. Consult your physician before taking any new medication even if it is an over the counter drug, vitamin, or herbal substance. Zoloft should not be taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) drugs, including linezolid and methylene blue. If you have recently been taking a MAOI, tell your doctor. Do not begin taking a MAOI within 2 weeks of discontinuing Zoloft treatment. Do not take Zoloft if you are allergic to sertraline or any of the other ingredients.
